Meet The Master by Greta Van Fleet

Greta Van Fleet released their highly anticipated single, “Meeting the Master” last week after nearly three years without releasing new music.  That is not to say they have not been busy though.  Since the summer of 2021, the group has been non-stop touring with a short run of shows on the Strange Horizons tour, followed by the massive Dreams in Gold tour.  As the tour came to an end in Sacramento, California, they debuted five new songs from their upcoming album, Starcatcher.  Their latest single, “Meeting the Master”, is a momentous step in the direction of establishing their unique sound and is nothing short of cinematic.

Greta Van Fleet already has an impressive catalogue under their belt and massive success at a young age and “Meeting the Master” proves they are well on their way towards greatness.  The song leads with a beautiful acoustic intro coupled with singer, Josh Kiszka’s powerful vocals and creates something I can only describe as ethereal.  It carries on with a whimsically airy feeling until the halfway mark where Danny Wagner’s thunderous drums unexpectedly kick in and the song shifts from acoustic to electric guitar.  Guitarist, Jake Kiszka, delivers one of my personal favorite solos of his that blends seamlessly with the resonating low end from bassist, Sam Kiszka.  The second half of the song is where Josh puts his vocal capabilities on full display.  He showcases his remarkable range while he hits and carries impressively high notes throughout the rest of the song.  The four brothers have created something extremely special with “Meeting the Master”.  This song is the physical manifestation of magic.

The most exciting part about this song is the potential it leaves for the rest of the album.  “Meeting the Master” could easily be on their previous album, The Battle at Gardens Gate, but it also serves as a bridge between that album and the sonic direction of Starcatcher.  If this is just a preview of what the new album will sound like, I am anxious to hear more.  This song takes all the grandiosity and expressiveness of The Battle at Gardens Gate, but still stays true to the classic guitar heavy roots of their earlier work and is truly something that all fans of Greta Van Fleet can appreciate.

It might have been a long wait for new music, but “Meeting the Master” made all the waiting worth it. This song takes a little bit of everything that makes Greta Van Fleet great and mixes it all together to make one of their most impressive songs yet. “Meeting the Master” is Greta Van Fleet cementing themselves in the rock n’ roll scene and can only be described as unique and original. They have broken away from the criticisms and comparisons of their early work and proven they are here to stay.
